Hong Kong's gore wars

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's Apple Daily has attracted considerable controversy as a result of having paid almost 500 pounds sterling for a photograph of Chan Kin-Hong, whose wife had murdered their two daughters and committed suicide following his infidelity with prostitutes. The photograph showed him in bed with two women described as 'female hairdressers.' This case has revived calls for the creation in Hong Kong of an institution similar to the UK's Press Complaints Commission. There is very strong competition among Hong Kong newspapers, and this is prompting journalists to seek increasingly sensational stories.

International lift-off delayed by disagreement and distrust

Article Abstract:

The construction of a new international airport on Hong Kong, which is due to open in Apr 1998, has attracted considerable controversy. The main area of conflict has been disagreement between the UK and China about the financing of the scheme, and this has delayed construction by almost a year. However, work is now proceeding rapidly, and it seems that the facility, which will be able to handle 30 million passengers a year, will be completed in line with the revised schedule.

Peking casting a lengthening shadow

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong trading house Jardine Matheson has encountered growing hostility as China prepares to take over Hong Kong. The Chinese government clearly sees Jardine as a legacy of colonial rule in Hong Kong, and has stated that it will not enjoy any preferential treatment once the colony reverts to Chinese rule. This is already making other Hong Kong companies unwilling to use Jardine as a business partner.
