Horror! Mail man let loose
Article Abstract:
The appointment of Martin Clarke as editor of The Scotsman has instigated a period of uncertainty at the newspaper. A number of executives have resigned in response to the way they have been treated by Clarke, and associate editor Lesley Riddoch is even going as far as suing Clarke and The Scotsman for constructive dismissal, breach of contract and sex discrimination. Journalists report that he treats staff at all levels very badly, and do not feel that this is the sort of change which the newspaper required.

No cost too high, no price too low
Article Abstract:
There is currently very fierce competition between the UK's The Times and The Daily Telegraph newspapers. Both newspapers have been prepared to make very risky moves to boost their circulation, and both claim that they now lead the broadsheet market. The Times has used price cutting extensively, for example, and this has led to extremely large losses. The Daily Telegraph's circulation figures seem impressive, but a significant proportion of its circulation is accounted for by discounted subscription schemes.

Article Abstract:
Price competition among United Kingdom newspaper publishers has left the market for quality daily papers with a loss of 50 million pounds sterling for 1996. News International launched the price war in 1993 and the long-term aim of this policy is to force a daily paper to close. The Independent is vulnerable, but so too is the Telegraph Group. The Office of Fair Trading has rejected complaints. Predatory pricing would not be permitted in the US.
