Housing may lose out to new jobs campaign
Article Abstract:
The UK government's Comprehensive Spending Review could lead to much of the 5 billion pounds sterling of housing capital receipts held by local councils being used for non-housing regeneration and employment schemes, rather than for housing construction and repair, according to some observers. This could be a particular problem in shire districts, where housing currently accounts for between 70% and 80% of capital expenditure. Housing associations fear that they may receive less in the form of grants from councils' capital budgets.

Housing: a concrete bungle?
Article Abstract:
It is widely believed within the housing sector in the UK that too high a proportion of insufficient investment is being made in renovating the worst social housing. Housing professionals feel that investment needs to be increased and that more emphasis should be placed on maintaining good quality social housing before it declines into a very poor state of repair. However, some observers point out that it is wrong to believe that an easy choice can be made between investing in the best and the worst social housing.
