Britain's brilliant career in the services sector proves a myth
Article Abstract:
UK chancellor Kenneth Clarke seems to believe that UK companies are in a strong position to meet the demands of expanding markets, being lean and sophisticated. However, if this were really the case, then UK productivity would be high and rising, with output per employee being higher than in France or Germany, at least in the service sector. In fact, latest research indicates that UK employees are less efficiently employed than those in France, Germany and the US.

Money: miracle cure of the Nineties
Article Abstract:
The compensation system for injury or bereavement in the UK seems to operate in an extremely arbitrary way. Lawyers, judges, insurance companies and civil servants determine how much mental or physical suffering claimants have endured, and the awards made often seem far too small or far too large. The amount of the award also depends on the allocation of blame for the incident, the earnings of the claimant and how determined the lawyer and the claimant are.
