How the wild West End will be won
Article Abstract:
The relationships in contemporary rock opera 'Rent' naturally win over audiences, regardless of their cultural background, according to producer Jeffrey Seller. The opera has been extremely successful in the US, and Seller now expects similar success in the UK. He believes that the opera's overall story of young people trying to realize their version of the American Dream has universal appeal, transcending any concerns audiences may have about the details of the subject matter, including HIV infection and drug use.

There's nothing like a change of scene
Article Abstract:
David Poutney, former director of productions at the English National Opera (ENO), has now begun a freelance career. He is currently working on a production of 'Twelfth Night,' moving away from opera after 25 years. He has had to adapt to a new approach to auditions and rehearsals, and has already learnt a great deal about how actors work. He has welcomed the opportunity to become involved in a new discipline, but will not be moving away from opera completely.

Cool, calm and directed
Article Abstract:
It is vital to encourage new writing, according to theatre director James Macdonald, who since 1993 has worked almost exclusively on premieres from living writers. However, he is now moving in another direction with his production of Marivaux's 'The Triumph of Love.' He is strongly attracted to Marivaux's compassion, and regards Marivaux as a fully-fledged humanist. He firmly believes that the theatre is about acting.
