How to have a field day with the secret of local historians
Article Abstract:
Old field names can give very valuable information about the historical uses of land in the UK, according to Common Ground, an environmental charity which works to protect the local distinctness of the countryside. This organisation has recently set up Field Days, a national scheme which is encouraging people to investigate fields. Field names tend to reflect the rich diversity of the countryside, and can point to features which have almost been forgotten.

No village shop? Then open one
Article Abstract:
The UK has seen the disappearance of many village shops over recent years. However, some village-dwellers have decided to work together to form their own community shop, and there are now 30 shops of this kind in England and Wales. The Village Retail Services Association (VRSA) has helped with the creation of 10 community shops since it was founded in 1993.
