Human rights and wrongs make profits a question of conscience; arms buyers run up sad tally of repression
Article Abstract:
The UK's policy on the sale of arms is coming under increasingly close scrutiny. Saudi Arabia, the main customer of the UK arms industry has a doubtful human rights record, and the Saferworld foundation, an independent think-tank, has also expressed reservations about Oman and the United Arab Emirates. In other parts of the world, countries with poor human rights records include Malaysia and Turkey. In some cases, the UK is even providing troops to countries which do not meet internationally agreed human rights standards.

War and peace, the story of mankind
Article Abstract:
There have been significant developments in views on war and peace since 1986. At that time, the Cold War was at its height, and many wars were raging. Since then, the situation has changed dramatically. The most significant influencing factors have been the break-up of the Warsaw Pact in 1990 and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Relations between east and west have now become much less tense, and Russian paratroops are even assisting in peace-keeping operations in Bosnia.

Instructors adopt gentle regime to toughen up recruits for combat duty
Article Abstract:
The British Army has over recent years adapted its training policy for new recruits to take account of the fact that, unlike their predecessors in earlier generations, many are now very unfit. Recruits are now introduced gradually to tests of physical fitness such as assault courses, rather than being expected to tackle them immediately. Trainers must take into account that recruits may have led a sedentary lifestyle and that they are often not used to pain or exertion.
