Hung on the issue of juries
Article Abstract:
The recent Maxwell trial has served to boost support for those who feel that complicated fraud trials should be heard by panel, rather than a jury. Even senior figures in the legal profession who are strongly in favour of juries for mainstream criminal cases are beginning to accept that the use of juries in complicated fraud trials creates many problems. It is possible that the jury is given a misleading view of the case, as the prosecution is obliged to focus on a small area of the overall proceedings in order to ensure that the jury fully understands.

'He used all these technical terms ... I thought he knew what he was talking about.' (expert witnesses)
Article Abstract:
A number of recent cases have highlighted problems with the UK's current system of using expert witnesses. Unreliable scientific evidence has several times led to the conviction of innocent people, and this has prompted calls for a review of the use of expert witnesses. The Academy of Experts, which now has 1,500 accredited experts on its register, ensures that all experts have the necessary technical experience and that they are fully aware of the issues involved in being an expert witness in a difficult case.

I didn't kill her. Let me out, or I'll die in prison
Article Abstract:
The case of Sheila Bowler, who was convicted for the murder of Florence Jackson, her husband's elderly aunt, in 1992, is now to be considered by Home Office minister Timothy Kirkhope, and will be referred back to the Court of Appeal. There was no forensic evidence to connect Mrs Bowler with the river bank next to where the body was found, or with the injuries the victim sustained. However, there was also no other apparent explanation for how Mrs Jackson died.
