Islanders fear super-quarry's threat to coastline

Plans to sink the largest quarry in the UK into a 1,500 ft mountain on the scenic Hebridean island of Harris have attracted considerable controversy. Around 1,000 islanders are now being balloted about the scheme, which would involve removing 600 million tons of rock from Roineabhal mountain. Some islanders have welcomed the plans, believing that it is necessary to reverse the island's population decline, while others fear that mining will damage traditional industries.

All of Scotland's ski resorts - Glenshee, the Lecht, Cairngorm, Glencoe and Nevis Range - have invested extensively in new lifts, additional piste areas and improved additional facilities recently. They are moving into new areas, such as snowboarding, and tour operators are offering additional attractions, including falconry, off-road driving and archery. It is now hoped that Scottish ski resorts will now start to attract skiers who have previously travelled abroad.
