I'd been told that a new father should light a fat cigar and head for the pub to wet the baby's head. But I wanted to stay
Article Abstract:
Hospital labour wards in the UK tend to be extremely female-oriented, and new fathers can feel very intimidated and out of place. However, some hospitals are becoming more open to the idea of men staying with their wives, even if arrangements are rather makeshift. Having the father present after the birth can be a great help to the new mother, who may not feel able to deal with the baby alone. It may be that eventually it will be regarded as strange for the father not to stay in hospital with the mother and baby after the birth.

Will the Prime Minister raise a cheer for men?
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair should make more effort to emphasize that the late 20th century offers men great freedom to move away from the past. The old cultural boundaries dictating how men should behave are being swept aside, and this is bringing new possibilities for men. It is becoming culturally acceptable for men to do most things, and men in the 21st century are likely to be very mature, capable and self-reliant. Blair should make a public statement of ambition and hope on behalf of men.

So when should a minister resign?
Article Abstract:
It is relatively uncommon for a UK government minister to be willing to resign as a sign that he or she takes the blame for a particular failure. Ministers generally resign as a result of a sexual or financial scandal, rather than as a result of an administrative failure. There have been many cases of this among Conservative ministers in recent years, while no Labour minister since 1945 has resigned as a result of his or her sexual behaviour.
