If the state school is fine, why pay?
Article Abstract:
There are some parents in the UK who until recently would never have considered having their children educated anywhere other than in a top private school. However, the choice is no longer so clear-cut, as the best comprehensive schools are now achieving very good examination results. Some parents are now beginning to realise that a local comprehensive school can offer the same results as a private school, and that they can save the money they would have spent on education for their children and put it to other uses.

Have you read any good books lately?
Article Abstract:
Many British children are not really attracted to reading the books adults feel they should be reading, and are very unlikely to discuss books they have read with their friends. However, they frequently read other material, such as magazines, newspapers and computer screens, and overall reading levels are rising. Indeed, children borrowed 111.5 million books from public libraries in 1996, up by 2 million from 1995.

The trouble with boys
Article Abstract:
Many UK schools have worked hard for a long time to improve the confidence and academic achievement of girls. This has been largely successful, and it is now boys who are experiencing problems instead. In many schools, boys risk social isolation if they are seen to work too hard, and are thus performing increasingly less well than girls. Some schools are now looking at ways of reviving boys' motivation.
