Noel: the last stately homo in England?
Article Abstract:
Noel Coward disliked people who were very open about any form of sexual activity, and did not speak openly about his own homosexuality. He expressed his homosexuality through social satire, and was able to disguise very cutting critiques of UK society as entertainment. He presented many different images to the world, and used ambivalence as the driving force for the internal contradiction which sparked his creativity. He used his powers of objective self-invention to present coded homosexual humour.

Offload the excess baggage
Article Abstract:
The new Radio 3 series 'Cultural Baggage' explores how commonplace objects and events have increasingly been given cultural status over recent years. The series is very bold in its approach, and is in some cases rather misguided. It selects a range of ordinary subjects, but some are too ordinary to be interesting and others are too complex to cover in a short space of time. The 20 programmes in the series are not linked, and they therefore lack intellectual focus.
