There is generally little cause for real concern when financial markets seem to be very unstable. However, it is worth giving attention to the plight facing Japanese banks, which seem to be being destroyed. Their reserves have been cut because of the fall of the Japanese stock market, and they have been forced to call in their loans. The Japanese government has limited room for manoeuvre, but has acted more decisively than other Asian governments faced with similar banking industry problems. It is possible that the difficulties facing Japanese banks could take on an international character.

The ninth Festival of Photojournalism, which is currently taking place in Perpignan, France, highlights the extent to which true photojournalism is different from the work of paparazzi photographers. Real photojournalists need deep empathy with their subject matter, and are prepared to spend a lot of time in unfashionable locations. In contrast, the relationship between paparazzi photographers and their subject matter is like that between the hunter and its prey. Furthermore, photojournalists require true courage.
