Article Abstract:
Boxing allows people to communicate without words, according to writer Geoffrey Beattie, professor of psychology at Manchester University. He has written nine books, the most recent of which, 'On the Ropes - Boxing as a Way of Life,' deals with the troubled background of boxing. He is particularly interested in listening to people talk, and often includes first-hand accounts in his writing. His new book has no high literary style, but contains a great deal of close observation.

High brow, low frequency
Article Abstract:
Rock group the Vulgar Boatmen has a very specific sound, even though its line-up can vary considerably. There can sometimes even be two groups of the same name in operation, as there are two viola players, two singers, several guitarists and a considerable number of drummers. The members believe in developing their music gradually, rather than working intensively in a studio for a very short time. They also have a strong sense of their musical roots.

A little bit of slap and tickle
Article Abstract:
Bassist Marcus Miller does not fit the traditional image of session musicians, who are generally seen as dull and inarticulate. He has been extremely successful over the last 18 years, working with artists such as Aretha Franklin and Luther Vandross, and has developed a highly respected ability to organise and modernise other people's music. He has been particularly influenced by working with Miles Davis.
