Article Abstract:
Granada now looks likely to succeed with its hostile takeover bid for Forte. This is because the changes which Forte has implemented in response to the bid have been interpreted as an admission of weakness. Investors now accept that Granada is offering a reasonable price for Forte, and will probably feel that Forte's management will not be able to run what remains of the business more successfully. This battle highlights a number of important lessons for investors. Most importantly, it is vital not to invest in sentimentality, focusing instead on where the real interests lie.

Investments
Article Abstract:
Many financial experts often used to refer to the 'small companies' effect, highlighting that small companies tended to outperform larger ones on the stock market, even taking into account the additional risk involved. This was a clear trend, but seems to have disappeared over recent years. In 1995, the total return on smaller companies in a bull market was almost 10% lower than that achieved by the All-Share Index. Nobody has really been able to explain why this should have happened.
