Is there any life left in the House of Commons?
Article Abstract:
The future of the UK House of Commons is looking increasingly uncertain. Power is being devolved to Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and significant policy announcements are often leaked before they even get to Parliament. The House of Commons Select Committees play a useful role, but the House of Commons seems to have little real power within government as a whole. It is now time to consider wide-reaching reform of the House of Commons if it is to be a truly effective body.

Out of the house of illusions
Article Abstract:
Conservative MP George Walden has recently resigned, stating that he feels he can no longer work in a political system which he believes is based on the 'management of illusions.' He feels that the House of Commons operates on promises which it will not be able to fulfil and that party politics have become meaningless. The political scene will be poorer for the loss of his creative and independent thinking.

Self-regulation scores a victory in the House
Article Abstract:
The UK's Committee on Standards and Privileges has recommended that in future it should hear evidence on oath. Such a move would reinforce the claim by the House of Commons that it can regulate itself, and would encourage MPs not to conceal information about themselves or others. It may even represent the beginning of a change in culture at the House of Commons, which would be a very positive development.
