It's a Lottery - but Camelot has earned its dosh
Article Abstract:
There has been very negative media coverage of the fact that the directors of Camelot, which operates the UK's National Lottery, have received large pay increases while the amount of money donated from the National Lottery yo good causes fell by 143 million pounds sterling in 1996. It is in fact very misguided to be critical of Camelot, which has been able to raise its directors' salaries only because it met the performance targets set by the government. It must be accepted that the lottery is part of the private sector, where large salaries for directors are normal.

Aunt Dot, siren of the Yorkshire Bronx
Article Abstract:
There have been significant changes within the small industrial community of Knottingley, England, since the 1970s. All the coal mines in the area except one have been shut down, and technology has reduced the amount of jobs available in other industrial operations too. There are significant social problems on the town's Warwick council estate, where many of the houses are boarded up and drug-dealing and crime are rife. However, there are still many extended families in the town, and there is a strong sense of community.
