'It's a huge emotional effort. But I'm addicted ...' (playwright David Hare)
Article Abstract:
Playwright David Hare believes that he has many depressive traits in his character. He remains very unsure of himself, and suffers from a chronic sense of failure. He has not given an interview to a national newspaper since 1993, as he feels that he was being misrepresented by journalists. However, a number of significant developments have taken place recently which are likely to affect his work. These include the election victory of the Labour party and the fact that he has reached his 50th birthday.

All of a sudden ...
Article Abstract:
Writing for children can present interesting challenges, according to Tim Firth, who has until recently been associated with television dramas and plays for adults but has now written a cartoon entitled 'Roger and the Rottentrolls' for Children's ITV. He has focused heavily on linearity of storyline, as he feels that this is important with work for children. He believes that it is possible to write effective for children, even if the writer concerned has no real empathy with children.

When writing is the best part
Article Abstract:
It can feel strange to combine acting and playwriting, according to Stephen Churchett. He spent many years acting in relatively minor roles, and never really gained public recognition. However, his first play, 'Tom and Clem,' was an immediate success. His second play, 'Heritage,' is to open shortly at the Hampstead Theatre in London, England. He is currently working on a third play, but may have to abandon this work if he gains more acting work.
