Warlord's son puts paid to Somalia's yearning for peace
Article Abstract:
Somali warlord General Aideed, who was recently wounded in battle and subsequently died, will be succeeded by his son, Hussein Farah Aideed. Some observers feel that the death of General Aideed will present an opportunity to bring about an end to the conflict in Somalia. However, his son is not taking a conciliatory tone, and this may prompt Ali Mahdi, the main enemy of Aideed's supporters, to reconsider the ceasefire which he declared recently.

Civil war turns against Khartoum
Article Abstract:
Government forces have experienced a number of defeats recently at the hands of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in southern Sudan. The war is now beginning to have an impact in the north too, even though the government is careful to conceal the extent of deaths among its troops. The war is proving very expensive, and this is causing consumer prices to rise.
