Jackie Brown is right. The only way out is to take a chance
Article Abstract:
Quentin Tarantino's film 'Jackie Brown' questions the view, to which United Kingdom Chancellor Gordon Brown subscribes, that work of any kind confers dignity and value. The film shows a flight attendant who is badly paid and occupies a very low status. Her fate reflects that of many people working in the services sector. It is not necessarily the case that such employment is worse than existing on welfare benefits, but it is clear that many people wish to escape jobs of this kind. This is shown in the fact that so many people purchase lottery tickets.

The book, which contains 109 images, deals with subjects including activism, mythology and economics, and particularly shows how death is commonplace in the everyday life of Brazilian peasants.

Martin Amis: better rich than read
Article Abstract:

These authors, who include Martin Amis, can afford to move from one publisher to another if they wish and can demand very large fees. Their rise has mainly been the result of the work of a small number of extremely hard-hitting literary agents who are able to negotiate very beneficial deals.
