Joe Williams
Article Abstract:
Singer Joseph Goreed, known as Joe Williams, began singing as a teenager. He joined the band led by clarinettist Jimmy Noone in 1937, and in 1941 joined the big band led by tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins. His career began to become established in 1949, when he joined Jay Burkhardt's band. He joined Count Basie's band in New York, NY, on Christmas Day 1954, remaining with this band for six years. He later recorded with the best jazz singers.

Panama Francis

Drummer and bandleader Panama Francis was born in Miami, FL, in 1918. He started his career in 1934 playing with the band led by tenor saxist George Kelly. He later worked with a wide range of stars, including Neil Sedaka, Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis and Sarah Vaughan.

J.J. Johnson

Trombonist, bandleader and composer James Johnson was born in Indianapolis, IN, in 1924. He took up the trombone as a teenager, and in 1942 joined Snookum Russell's band.
