Mr Brown may want to be leader, but he must wait
Article Abstract:
UK Chancellor Gordon Brown has developed considerable authority. This, along with the country's strong economic performance, has given him confidence, as reflected in his speech to the 1999 Labour party conference. However, he is aware that he will not easily win the leadership of the Labour party from Prime Minister Tony Blair. He prefers at present to remain on good terms with Blair, working with him to ensure that economic growth continues and that the Labour party remains in power.

Consumers are fed up with a diet of Whitehall rubbish
Article Abstract:
The UK ministry of agriculture has experienced a number of crises over recent years, particularly as a result of its close links with the food industry. Many observers feel that it has been far too unwilling to criticise the food industry. Most recently, this has been demonstrated in its failure to take action on poor hygiene standards in abattoirs. There are now signs that large food producers are losing their control overthis ministry, but changes will take place only very slowly.
