Just what is fashion for ...?
Article Abstract:
Fashion plays an extremely important role in modern society. It offers a unique combination of universality and instantaneity, and is relevant to everyone, as everyone needs to buy clothes. Clothes are a very intimate form of self-expression, and convey very clear messages. Fashion is particularly important at times of national crisis, as it touches everyone and is therefore a very potent weapon. During the second world war, for example, clothes were used to express communal solidarity and identity.

Stalked by the shadows of history
Article Abstract:
The Jewish community in the UK is aware that it is in constant danger of attack by anti-Semitists. Key Jewish centres, such as the Board of Deputies of British Jews, are protected by armed policemen, and security is constantly kept at very high levels. The UK is still regarded as a haven for Jews, who feel safer in the UK than elsewhere, but over recent years the UK has had the worst record of anti-Semitic attacks of any country in the world.

The trouble with the Barbican
Article Abstract:
London's Barbican arts centre, which opened in 1983, is claimed to be the largest of its kind in Europe. It has a wide range of facilities, but its design, which often confuses visitors, has been extensively criticised. It attracts 2 million visitors a year, but many observers believe that it could be a lot more successful. Some feel that it is still suffering from the controversy it attracted under managing director Detta O'Cathain.
