Justice for the not-so-rich
Article Abstract:
Conditional fee arrangements, in which lawyers and clients agree that the client will pay almost nothing if a case is not successful but the lawyer will receive a success fee if the case is won, now cover all civil proceedings in the UK apart from family law cases. The government believes that this development will ensure that access to justice is widened. Those considering entering into a conditional fee arrangement with their lawyer should be aware that they will be liable for any disbursements incurred and any costs incurred by the opponent. It may be wise to take out insurance to cover these costs.

Equal pay? No, not yet
Article Abstract:
British women still earn on average around 20% less per hour than men, even though the principle of equal pay for equal work has existed for many years. This has prompted the Equal Opportunities Commission to introduce a code of practice on equal pay. This details existing equal pay legislation and explains to employers the main legal issues relating to pay. It calls on employers to re-assess their pay systems, considering whether any inequalities exist between the pay of male and female employees.
