Knavery, trickery and deceit
Article Abstract:
The National Gallery in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition entitled 'Degas: Beyond Impressionism.' This deals with his late works, painted at a time when he lived in a very reclusive way. However, the works do not reflect this, as they are still defiant and joyful, and contain a strong sense of discovery usually associated with younger artists. There are a number of paintings portraying dancers, and the exhibition also contains pastels of nude women.

Victorian vices
Article Abstract:
Victorian artist Frederic Leighton, whose work is currently being exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, England, took a very thorough approach to his work, but was often guilty of historical inaccuracies. This did not deter his patrons, who greatly enjoyed works which referred to past times. Leighton eventually became president of the Royal Academy and was greatly respected, even though his work lacked feeling and conception.

Every silver lining needs a cloud
Article Abstract:
Ernst Gombrich's exhibition 'Shadows: the depiction of cast shadows in Western Art,' currently being held at the National Gallery, contains some great paintings, including Caravaggio's 'The Supper at Emmaus.' However, this does not make it a great exhibition. In fact, this exhibition is little more than an uncoordinated collection of paintings, based on a thesis which has not been adequately developed.
