Phobes to the right, phobes to the left
Article Abstract:
The recent debate between Alex Salmond, leader of the Scottish National Party, who favours independence for Scotland, and Shadow Scottish Secretary George Robertson, who favours devolution, highlighted the differences between Scottish nationalism, which is broadly left-wing, and English Conservative nationalism, which is right-wing. Conservative nationalists tend to be anti-European, while Scottish Nationalists are strong supporters of integration with Europe. This background may benefit the Labour party, which may appear safe and reliable between the two extremes.

The secret that Blair and Major share
Article Abstract:
There has been extensive media coverage of clashes within the Conservative party and between the Conservative and Labour parties over issues relating to the UK's links with the European Union. This hides the fact that the Conservative and Labour parties actually agree on all the main aspects of European integration. Labour party leader Tony Blair is showing a much more pro-European attitude, and has followed prime minister John Major in not making a definitive judgment on whether a referendum should be held on European integration.

Major turns his back on the Europhiles
Article Abstract:
There have been signs over recent weeks that anti-European forces within the Conservative party have been increasing their influence over prime minister John Major. He has spoken out in public against a single currency, and has expressed the belief that nothing tangible will come out of the inter-governmental conference in 1996. He now seems very keen to agree with the Euro-sceptical rebels, even though pro-European ministers insist that no policy compromises have been made.
