The backwater bag lady
Article Abstract:
A elderly South African woman named Lucy has developed a technique for making large, colourful bags out of small plastic carrier bags. She cuts the carrier bags into 1 cm-strips, and then weaves the strip on to a backcloth made of plastic hessian sacking. The recycling of plastic carrier bags in this way is just one example of how waste materials are used extremely creatively in South Africa, where many blacks have very limited resources.
