Laid bare, Major is looking vulnerable
Article Abstract:
There is a growing feeling of opposition to prime minister John Major as he seeks re-election as leader of the Conservative party, with even newspapers which have traditionally been strongly Conservative criticising him. Many Conservative MPs remain undecided, with their constituencies not giving Major the full backing which they had expected. Both Michael Heseltine and Michael Portillo are now making preparations for a second ballot.

Egg-bound in this Tory pudding
Article Abstract:
The Conservative party has been in power for far too long, and even the Conservatives themselves have become dissatisfied with this situation. The government seems to have no new ideas, and is simply returning in new ways to old themes. Even replacing John Major as Conservative party leader will not be enough to ensure that the party remains in power after the next general election.

After the euphoria, the Norma option
Article Abstract:
John Major's unexpected decision to resign as leader of the Conservative Party has created a sense of enthusiasm, both among his supporters and his critics. The move could even be seen as a grand gesture, temporarily obliterating other concerns. However, this euphoria will not last long, as many problems will still remain even if he is re-elected.
