Land of missed opportunity
Article Abstract:
Sydney Opera House is a key landmark in Sydney, Australia, yet it was never finished, and architect, Jorn Utzon saw this as a betrayal. The Labor government of New South Wales argued that Utzon did not have to be paid since drawings of the opera house's interiors had not been submitted. They were found in a Sydney public library, so it appears that this claim was false. Utzon's design was also criticised on the grounds that the acoustics were not good enough, yet they had been developed by key German experts in this field.

For Alvar Aalto, a cool centenary celebration
Article Abstract:
Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, who was born in 1898, was extremely influential in moving Finland into a more modern and functional architectural phase. However, he also respected the strong attachment in Finland to nature and to timber technology. He had an individual approach to interpreting International Modernism, and made extensive use of timber and stone, rather than glass, steel and bricks. The centenary of his birth is being marked by the Alvar Aalto Museum by the Aalto Centennial International Student Prize 1998.
