My fear of the free lunch
Article Abstract:
Personal finance journalists hold a very low position in the newsroom hierarchy. However, the finance sections of newspapers attract a great deal of advertising, and personal finance is set to become an increasingly important subject as the UK government encourages people to make their own financial arrangements. Already, financial service companies are seeking to establish very close links with personal finance journalists, offering them many gifts and incentives. Some personal finance journalists win large sums of money in competitions sponsored by financial services companies, while others write for banks or insurance companies on a freelance basis.

Mr Blair, politician and writer
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair writes extensively for a wide range of newspapers. Indeed, he has written a total of around 166 articles since he came to power, far more than any previous prime minister. He has focused particularly on mass-market tabloid newspapers, having written 30 articles for The Sun and 25 for The Mirror. These articles are in fact written by members of the government's Strategic Communications Unit, but they are all read by Blair before publication. The government seems determined to present its message directly, rather than relying on political journalists.
