Last appeal to a lost empire
Article Abstract:
The UK Privy Council continues to make the final decision about the fate of death-row prisoners in Trinidad and Tobago. Some lawyers believe that this system should now be replaced with a Caribbean Court of Appeal. This development would be widely welcomed in Trinidad and Tobago, where violent crime is common and the vast majority of the population favours capital punishment. However, removing the Privy Council's right to hear appeals in murder cases may also mean that Caribbean countries run the risk of losing the House of Lords jurisdiction in commercial issues relating to business disputes.

'Eyeless babies' case goes to US
Article Abstract:
The Delaware Appellate Court has ruled that the British parents of children born without eyes or with extremely small eyes can bring claims for damages in the US courts. The parents believe that a garden fungicide and crop spray produced by US concern DuPont caused damage to these children before birth. US families have already brought cases against DuPont for a similar condition claimed to be linked to exposure to a chemical agricultural spray produced by the company.

Within sight of justice
Article Abstract:
British families who believe that their children were born with either very small eyes or no eyes at all as a result of pre-natal exposure to an agricultural spray manufactured by DuPont have won the right to bring legal action against the company in the US. This development is set to have significant repercussions for cases of cross border litigation and the practice of selecting the most favourable jurisdiction in which to bring legal proceedings.
