Last of the great shipyards may die
Article Abstract:
Staff at Kvaerner's shipbuilding operations in Govan, Scotland, face an uncertain future following the Norwegian company's decision to sell off its shipbuilding and engineering activities. The 1,200 employees have received 90-day redundancy notices, but they are determined to keep the shipyard open. Scottish Industry Minister Lord Macdonald of Tradeston, who began work as an apprentice in a nearby shipyard, has stated that a taskforce he has created will look at all options for finding a purchaser.
