Left becomes right as Le Pen infiltrates Red Belt
Article Abstract:
The far right National Front party of France has made great inroads into gaining the support of the French working class at the expense of the Communist Party. Of the 76 municipalities around Paris, half sent Communist deputies to the National Assembly 20 years ago but in 1992 more voted for the National Front than the Communists. Of the eight Ile-de-France departments, only the Val de Marne, where the Communist General Secretary Georges Marchais has the seat, are the Communists in the lead and then only very marginally. In the whole region the National Front has beaten the ruling Socialists as well as the Communists.

Article Abstract:
'Le Monde' reported on Jul 9 1992 that Henri Emmanuelli, the 47-year-old President of the French National Assembly, fourth in the state hierarchy, would be charged with illegal party funding. Renaud Van Ruymbeke, a Rennes magistrate is investigating the Urba affair in which other Socialist officials have been charged. Mr Emmanuelli is former party treasurer. Two other politicians charged with fraud and corruption resigned in 1992. The lorry drivers blockades are another indication of lack of respect for the government.

Legislation is passed with little discussion as the subject of a confidence motion under Article 49-3 of the constitution.
