Remote Smith is accused of complacency
Article Abstract:
Since John Smith was elected to the Labour leadership nearly a year ago he has become extremely remote. Prime Minister John Major gives more set interviews to the newspapers than does Mr Smith, the media generally only seeing him when he wants to present a carefully arranged press conference. The Labour party is suspicious of misrepresentation by the mainly pro-Conservative media. Labour politicians and supporters are worried, especially because party membership has fallen to around 200,000, less than Greenpeace or Friends of the Earth. The Liberal Democrats have over 100,000 members.

Oh Mr Mandelson, will they ever love you?
Article Abstract:
UK Minister without Portfolio Peter Mandelson has failed to win a seat on the Labour party's ruling national executive. He sought election to this body in order to counter criticism that he held power without accountability. He has expressed disappointment at failing to be elected, but has pointed out that it is very rare for somebody to be elected to this body at their first attempt. Some observers believe he failed to get elected because he is relatively unknown among party members.
