Legacy of corrupt and ruthless dictator who built Versailles in the jungle
Article Abstract:
A career in the army was the driving force behind the rise to political power of President Mobutu of Zaire. He led a coup in 1960, deposing Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba, and in Nov 1965 undertook a second coup, bringing himself into power. He exploited the country's vast mineral reserves while the country as a whole remained very poor, and built up great personal wealth. He remained in power for so long because he was able to portray himself as the person who unified the country and because he received support from the West.

Zaire holds its breath as rebels dictate plans for the future
Article Abstract:
Rebels fighting for the alliance of democratic forces for the liberation of Congo-Zaire, who now hold large parts of eastern Zaire, are looking to make local people aware of their beliefs. This is being undertaken through 'transformation' seminars, following which candidates are evaluated for ideological correctness. The best candidates may then gain employment as public servants. It now seems likely that the government of president Mobutu will be overthrown, but it is uncertain what will follow.
