Leslie A. Marchand

Scholar of English literature and writer Leslie Marchand accepted a post at Farthest North College in Alaska in 1923. He was able to earn enough money to finance a trip to Paris, France, and began an academic career at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He took his doctorate at Columbia University in New York, NY, just before the outbreak of the second world war. He travelled to the UK in Jul 1947, and from there went to Switzerland, Italy and Greece. He developed a particular interest in Greece, and spent a year as Byron Professor in Athens.

Jerome Robbins
Article Abstract:
Ballet dancer, choreographer and director Jerome Robbins studied classical ballet with Antony Tudor and others and drama with Elia Kazan. He was selected to dance in the Ray Bolger musical 'Keep off the Grass' in 1940, and later in 1940 joined Ballet Theatre as a corps de ballet dancer. He became principal dancer, but moved to New York City Ballet in 1948. He achieved overnight success as a choreographer in 1944 when Ballet Theatre premiered his 'Fancy Free.'

Leslie Edwards
Article Abstract:
Dancer and ballet master Leslie Edwards was born in Teddington, England, in 1916. He studied dance with Marie Rambert and at the Vic-Wells Ballet School. He made his stage debut with Rambert's Ballet Club in 1932.
