Let science drive economic growth forward
Article Abstract:
It is clear that the UK government is becoming increasingly aware of the significance of science and technology. The science budget has been substantially increased, and the government is also seeking to establish a climate in which the commercialization of new ideas is encouraged. Scientific developments play a key role in economic progress, which in turn improves human life in the most basic ways. However, it is important to consider the role of the profit motive in the type of scientific developments taking place at present.

Why it makes economic sense to pay us economists more
Article Abstract:
The UK's economists are very unwilling to work in universities, as salaries in business are much higher than those offered to academics. A serious shortage of economists in academe is emerging, with almost nobody wishing to study for a PhD in economics. The lack of genuine competition in the academic job market is the main reason why average university salaries are too low. There is now a clear need for deregulation in the academic job market, with the abolition of centrally planned pay scales in universities.
