The Scottish fund management industry has been facing serious problems for some time. Leading concerns have been badly affected by the unexpected departure of senior employees, and the industry's performance is no longer widely regarded as superior to that of the City of London. Negative publicity could significantly damage its reputation and eliminate its unique selling position, the factor which has traditionally fuelled its success.

Investing in equities is the best way to protect wealth, according to the latest 'Equity-Gilt Study' from Barclays de Zoete Wedd. The study also concludes that all investors should, where possible, reinvest income. However, there are also times when it is more profitable in the short term to sell equities than to hold them. Gilts, equities and cash all perform better when inflation is below its long-term trend.
