The refusal by South West Trains to let Lisa Grant, who deals with telephone enquiries at the rail station in Southampton, England, have a concessionary travel pass for Jill Percey, her girlfriend, has now been taken to the European Court of Justice. The company claims that concessionary travel passes can only be granted to spouses or common-law partners of the opposite sex. Grant believes that this stance makes her feel that her relationship is being devalued. The European Court of Justice will have to consider whether a public sector employer can discriminate against homosexual employees.

Most people are no longer shocked to see a woman wearing a bra as outerwear. Women feel that they are able to dress in this way without necessarily being seen as provocative, and are spending more and more on buying bras. In the UK, the bra business is now worth 500 million pounds sterling a year. Average breast size has become larger, and manufacturers have responded by developing larger-cup ranges. There are indications that fashion could be turning away from extremely thin models with very small breasts.

The very small South Pacific island of Nauru is to take 310 of the Afghan asylum-seekers who were rescued by a Norwegian freighter and refused entry to Australia. When their cases have been processed, they will be resettled in countries including New Zealand, Australia and Norway.
