Guy's Hospital director of surgery Lord McColl thinks the recession is worldwide and supports John Major. Lord Chancellor Lord Mackay became involved in a fierce political battle in autumn 1995 which led the government to drop his Family Homes and Domestic Violence Bill. He has now come to public attention again over the issue of legal aid. The legal aid Green Paper proposes to make legal aid available only through franchised solicitors' firms which hold contracts for a specific geographical area and aspect of law. He believes that is important to give legal aid to the most deserving cases, rather than simply to the very poor.

Abused boy's legacy of heartache and despair

Mr and Mrs Wilton placed their adopted son into care because he was too disruptive and demanding. He showed classic signs of past abuse including compulsive eating and bed-wetting. His older brothers and sisters at Barnardo's explanations of their life-style suggested sexual abuse. He had been shown pornography and locked in a dark cupboard before he was six. No-one told the Wilton's this and their life became intolerable.
