Making death a feature of life itself
Article Abstract:
Prayer and the departed are affected by the relationship between the mourner and the departed. The Christian tradition encompasses three strands: the Catholic one, where the departed need our prayers so their sins may be forgiven as God purifies them; the Protestant one, where mourners give thanks for the life of the Christian and look forward to the resurrection at the end of time; and the third, where the relationship between the community and those who have died results in prayers which ask God to 'give them rest in your presence,' based on the teaching of the Eastern Churches.

The doctor prescribes death
Article Abstract:
A Dutch documentary which showed Dr Wilfred van Oyjen giving a lethal injection to a man in the last stages of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis caused considerable controversy. The documentary, 'Death on Request,' attracted great interest from TV companies across the world, and is soon to be shown by the BBC. The doctor concerned has had many letters expressing support for his actions, but has also been strongly criticised by the Roman Catholic church.
