Speaking truth to power
Article Abstract:
The intellectual has to work out how to speak the truth with objectivity to project a better state of affairs which corresponds more closely to a set of moral principles: peace, reconciliation and abatement of suffering. US historian Robert Novick showed competing claims for objectivity. The 19th century French intellectual Albert de Tocqueville wrote about democratic freedoms which he did not apply to national practices. Intellectuals have to bring ideas of equality and harmony for all to actual situations in international relations, such as the Gulf war.
