Mansun: four satanic, half-lunatic hooligans?
Article Abstract:
Success in the rock music industry depends heavily on very subjective factors, according to Paul Draper, lead singer of rock group Mansun. This group was only signed to a publishing deal in Oct 1995, and its first album, 'Attack of the Grey Lantern,' entered the UK charts at number one in Feb 1997. It is shortly to undertake a tour of the Far East and Australia, and after this will play at increasingly large venues in the UK. The group has made rather haphazard progress towards fame, and its members still find it hard to believe that they have become stars.

Pop's coming from Iceland
Article Abstract:
There is a vibrant music scene in Reykjavik, Iceland. The city is geographically remote, thus fostering original thought, and also has a high proportion of educated, ambitious young people within its population. Prices are high, thus deterring tourists, but there seems to be sufficient stimulus from within the city itself. Local pop groups which have the potential to gain international acclaim include Gus Gus, which has nine members with skills including acting, dancing, modelling and film-making.

Good rockin' tonight
Article Abstract:
The town of Tupelo, MS, the birthplace of Elvis Presley, is just like thousands of other small towns in the US. However, it is seeking to exploit its associations with Presley to attract tourists. It is holding its first Elvis Presley festival, which includes screenings of his films, a vintage car show, an exhibition of posters and a performance by Presley impersonator Trent Carlini. The street on which Presley was born has already been renamed Elvis Presley Drive.
