Mariage a la mode
Article Abstract:
Italian conductor Riccardo Chailly initially encountered some hostility when he began working with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He had to insist on a more explorative approach, and gradually introduced a wide range of new music. He believes that it is vital to remain inquisitive and open to new ideas, but accepts that it will take time to change an orchestra's views. He rejects the idea that it is possible to arrive at a final interpretation of a piece of music.

'Never lose sight of what the music means.' (conductor Kurt Masur)
Article Abstract:
Kurt Masur, Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, feels that it is important to hear what players have to say and to allow them to express themselves freely. He only intervenes when he feels that players are in conflict with the spirit of the music. He works the orchestra extremely hard, not stopping until he is completely happy with the result. However, he is widely respected for his passion and his ability to get the best from players.
