Markets are soaring, profits are high - where is the investment boom?
Article Abstract:
The UK economy has been expanding much more steadily in the current recovery than was the case in previous recoveries. However, total investment has actually declined as a share of GDP. Around one-third of the low level of investment is attributable to limited investment by the government, but the public sector has accounted for two-thirds. Within business, low levels of investment have been most noticeable in services and utilities, rather than in manufacturing. The government is aware that investment is vital if it is to fulfill its promise to create well-paid and rewarding jobs.

Inflation up, unemployment rising, house sales flat. Is there a recession on the way?
Article Abstract:
The UK is seeing mixed economic performance. Some indicators, such as unemployment, are showing negative trends, but this does not mean that the economy is entering a period of recession. The government's tough stance on inflation is having a negative impact on the manufacturing sector, and this trend is set to continue. Furthermore, there are signs that pay pressures are increasing. However, there are good prospects for information technology, finance and business services, which are becoming increasingly significant elements of the UK economy.

Go away, ye merchants of gloom, your wares are not needed here
Article Abstract:
There is considerable pessimism in the UK about the prospects for the country's economy. However, a great deal of this is not based on hard evidence. Stock market investors do not believe that capitalism is facing a crisis, and share prices have been rising to new records. Investors are right to be generally positive, as business has been steady for the last five years and capitalism has created many opportunities for expansion.
