Masked Basle
Article Abstract:
The 'Fasnacht' celebrations begin in Basle, Switzerland, on the first Monday of Lent and run for three days. They are the culmination of several months of very hard work by more than 12,000 people. The celebrations begin before dawn, when hand-painted lanterns illuminate a procession of costumed and masked figures. This opening parade is made up of more than 100 groups, each containing 25-200 members. Masked figures playing traditional Swiss music are a feature throughout the three days of 'Fasnacht.'

Songs of bitter experience
Article Abstract:
There is a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere in Timbuktu, Mali, which was a thriving city of 100,000 people at the height of its power in the 15th and 16th centuries. The town began around 1,000 years ago as a Tuareg seasonal camp, but the Tuareg now live in camps on the edge of the town. They are very poor, and rely heavily on income from tourism. There is a strong sense that Timbuktu retains its power and its secrets.
