Michael Hartnett
Article Abstract:
Poet and translator Michael Hartnett was born in west Limerick, Ireland, in 1941. He became a city-dweller, but retained a deep understanding of how villages and rural communities saw themselves. He spent time in Spain and London, England, in the 1960s, and raised two children in Dublin, Ireland. He developed a detailed knowledge of Gaelic literature and experimented with a range of verse forms. He wrote in both English and Gaelic, and found that translation offered a value neither language could offer itself.
