Pop music: one man's part in its downfall
Article Abstract:
Many books have been written about successful pop groups, but very little attention has been given to the many more groups which did not become famous. A recent book by Giles Smith, who himself played in a failed pop group, has attempted to rectify this. It captures the great vision involved in forming a pop group, and highlights how success in the world of pop music is much more to do with coincidence and luck than with talent.

Professionals not placemen: how to reform the quango
Article Abstract:
The UK's system of making appointments to public bodies is inefficient and based almost entirely on patronage. The general public has little idea about who these people really are, and the system almost seems to actively discourage competence.
