Missing: 7bn pounds sterling of our taxes
Article Abstract:
The UK government is set to be short of tax revenues amounting to around 7 billion pounds sterling in 1996. Economists are finding it difficult to explain why this should be happening, especially at a time when the economy as a whole is growing. Some attribute it to extensive tax evasion by multi-national companies, while others put forward other explanations. It is most likely that the slump in tax revenues is the result of the many changes which have taken place in the UK economy over the last 10 years, which have made it harder to collect taxes.

Why the South must develop trade closer to home
Article Abstract:
Developing countries should avoid relying too heavily on trade with industrialised countries, where economic slowdown could lead to a collapse in prices, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development's annual Trade and Development Report. If developing countries attempt to flood markets in industrialised countries, then there is a danger that the industrialised countries will start to adopt protectionist policies. Increased emphasis should be given to expanding trade between developing countries.

Gurus agree to differ on the risk of a Wall Street crash
Article Abstract:
There is evidence to suggest that pessimism about Wall Street is justified. Shares are not the most overvalued they have ever been, but are approaching this level. However, stockmarket collapses have always been prompted by an external shock. If such a shock does not arise, then real returns on equities will slow towards trend but could sustain that trend for a further 20 years or longer. Optimists about Wall Street emphasize that the equity risk premium needed by investors has fallen.
