Money doesn't make the world go round
Article Abstract:
Economic indicators show that the UK is probably entering a period of sustained economic growth, and prime minister John Major has already promised that living standards will double over the next 25 years. However, people do not seem to be inspired by the prospect of greater wealth, and this may be a sign that traditional assumptions about the role of economic growth in human happiness may no longer be valid. Economic growth is no longer seen as the solution to social and environmental problems, and people have been disappointed with what they have gained from expanding choice.

Can we really afford to grow old?
Article Abstract:
Younger people in the developed world will have to face a growing financial burden as the number of older people who are dependent on the working population for financial support rises. It is also likely that the welfare system will not be able to offer them full financial security when they become old, so they will have to make greater provision than previous generations did for their retirement. Society has traditionally been divided on a class basis, but this divide is now increasingly between young and old.

Charity begins with home truths
Article Abstract:
The UK still has a strong voluntary sector, reflecting its long tradition of independent charitable organisations. Charities now play a key role as contractors to government, and new charities are constantly emerging. However, concern has been expressed recently about the future direction of the voluntary sector. Private giving to charity has remained static over recent years, and the National Lottery has increased the power of the government over the voluntary sector.
